Paddock Cleaner

Paddock Cleaner Manure Collector

Our paddock cleaner range is designed for poo-picking horse manure, Alpaca, and other animal poop from the fields and paddocks. Good paddock maintenance is essential for controlling parasites that might affect the health of your horses, and veterinary surgeons encourage horse owners to poo-pick the fields regularly to maintain a low worm count.

The Trafalgar paddock cleaners are manufactured in the UK and are available as manual, towable, and self-propelled models. These strong yet lightweight units are easy to start and simple to use. Their unique “clean fan” vacuum system means there is less chance of horse poo blocking up, unlike other “dirty fan” paddock cleaners.
Powered by Honda four-stroke (unleaded petrol) engines for reliability, low maintenance, and fuel efficiency, these machines are also very easy to clean. Whether the horse poo is old or new, in short or long grass, wet, dry, or even scattered, our paddock vacuum cleaners will clean it up every time.

Why Use our Paddock Cleaners?

Paddock and stable clearing just couldn’t be quicker or easier! The unique clean fan system of our paddock cleaner enables you to vacuum up horse manure, alpaca droppings, dog waste, poultry and game shed bedding, shotgun cartridges, spent clays, garden waste, wood shavings, sawdust, general litter, etc. These machines can clear leaves from a gravel driveway without sucking up the stones by adjusting the engine revs accordingly, and can even be used for cleaning out the bottom of water troughs and ponds.

Maintaining your paddocks

Good pasture management is the key to clean paddocks and healthy horses. Poo-picking your pastures regularly is the most effective way of reducing your horse’s parasite problem. Paddock cleaners are more efficient than manual back-breaking, time-consuming methods such as shoveling muck into a wheelbarrow. Picking up manure as often as possible will reduce the number of parasites and encourage the horses to eat from the whole field reducing selective grazing.

What is a paddock cleaner?

Also known as a pasture vacuum or paddock sweeper, a paddock cleaner is a piece of specialized equipment used in agriculture and animal husbandry to clean and maintain grazing areas or paddocks for horses, livestock, or other animals. It efficiently removes manure, fallen tree debris, etc. from the ground, improving pasture hygiene and overall animal health.

These vacuums are mounted on wheels and can be manually pushed (wheelbarrow type), self-propelled, or towed behind an ATV or compact tractor.

Important features and functions of a paddock cleaner

Collection Mechanism:

Most paddock cleaners typically have a vacuum system powered by a 4-stroke petrol engine used to suck up horse and alpaca dung, hay, straw, leaves, acorns, etc.

Storage Tank:

They come with a collection bin or tank where the collected material is stored before emptying is required. The capacity varies from model to model but when compared to normal wheelbarrow loads, is typically from 3 to 6 loads more.

Emptying system:

The tubs have a door that can be opened and locked in place to enable a lift and tip function. This can be done with a foot release and lifting bar (towable models), or a lever release and tip (manual and self-propelled units) for easy emptying.

Paddock cleaners prevent the accumulation of manure, which can harbor parasites and lead to unsanitary conditions. By removing waste, pasture quality improves, and the risk of injuries to animals caused by tripping or stumbling over waste is reduced.

Importance of Poo Picking

Removing animal droppings (usually horse manure) from fields is an important aspect of pasture and land management for several reasons:

Health of Grazing Animals:

Leaving manure in the field can lead to the spread of internal parasites and diseases with an increased worm count among the grazing animals. When animals graze near or ingest contaminated manure, they can contract illnesses or develop parasitic infestations. Regular pasture cleaning helps reduce this risk and expensive vet bills!

Pasture Quality:

Accumulated manure can smother grass preventing healthy growth. By removing manure, you allow the grass to thrive and provide better nutrition for the grazing animals, typically gaining back more of your horse paddocks and increasing the grazing area effectively saving you money.

Aesthetic and Safety:

Clean, well-maintained pastures are more aesthetically pleasing and safer for both animals and humans.

Environmental Benefits:

Manure can contain nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which, if not managed properly, can leach into streams and rivers contributing to water pollution. Poo picking helps control nutrient runoff and benefits the overall environment.

Reducing Fly Populations:

Accumulated poop is a breeding ground for flies and other pests. By removing it from the paddocks, you help reduce fly populations, creating a more comfortable environment for animals and humans alike.

In summary, poo-picking your fields is essential for the health and well-being of grazing animals, the quality of the pasture, safety, environmental responsibility, and sometimes legal compliance. It’s a practice that contributes to good land and animal management.

How to start your machine

Starting a paddock cleaner typically involves the following steps, but it’s important to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions in the user manual for your specific paddock cleaner model, as starting procedures may vary:

Check Fuel level:

Ensure it is fresh, “clean” fuel. These days it is recommended to use a known brand and use E5 due to the high levels of ethanol present in standard E5 unleaded fuel. Remember not to over-tighten the petrol cap! Check the oil level and air filter are clean before use. Depending on the model you may need to prime the engine with the primer bubble (PC50). Check the manual.

Starting the engine:

Firstly, switch the red switch to the on position. Turn the choke to the on position (just for starting – remember not to leave the choke in the on position when using the paddock vacuum cleaner. Turn the fuel lever to the on position (Remember to turn it off when you are not using the machine). Position yourself accordingly, when taking “up the slack” on the pull cord to the point of resistance, now pull firmly with sufficient speed to start the engine (Please note you may need to try this a few times – especially in cold weather). If it doesn`t start, try again but with the choke switched off.

Warm-up period:

Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before using the vacuum. This helps ensure that the engine reaches its optimal operating temperature.

Does it really suck up wet poos all year round?

Yes, it really does. In short, it is down to the clever design of the “clean fan” system and the bespoke trafalgar fan giving superior suction.

Does it really use as little fuel as you suggest?

We have compared it to “another” leading brand that  is typical of all “dirty fan” systems where the “muck hits the fan” and, yes, it really does use typically a 1/7 of fuel for the same run time AND gives better suction/results.

Why isn`t your hose supported by a gantry system?

It just doesn`t need one, the machines and hoses are light to handle as they are. Therefore simpler and no cumbersome gantry to deal with that could get damaged!

Why would I buy a paddock vacuum instead of a sweeper poo picker?

Excuse the pun but it really is “horses for courses”. There are a number of reasons why you would buy a vacuum instead of a sweeper system: Paddock sweepers need particular conditions to work effectively and are more expensive where the trafalgar paddock vacuums can work effectively in long, wet grass all year round.

We sell both types and can give you honest independant advice – give us a call to discuss your set up and needs.
