Arena Leveller
An arena leveller is sometimes known as a menage leveller or menage grader. Arena surfaces, sand schools, gallops, indoor and outdoor riding surfaces that can consist of a variation of silica sand, rubber, wax, fibre, foam and clothing materials, all need to be maintained with an arena leveller. Whatever your requirements are, give us a call so we can advise.
Why is it so important to level and maintain your horse arena correctly? Arena maintenance is very important. A riding school is quite often the biggest individual investment a horse owner, equestrian livery or stud yard will make, so it is vitally important to maintain it properly, to avoid more substantial costs a few years down the line. Whether it be an indoor or outdoor arena, sand school or gallops, ongoing care and maintenance is essential. The Chapman professional arena leveller or menage leveller is the best choice for the upkeep of your arena, reducing dust and improving drainage. It will knock out hard and high spots and will lift the top surface, whilst maintaining the underneath to a consistent depth and firmness, achieving minimal membrane movement. This machine will ultimately save you thousands of pounds over time and improve your riding experience. |

How to set up and use the Chapman arena grader
So imagine your uneven riding surface! Let us explain why our machine does the job quickly, easily and more importantly properly. This high quality arena grader is supplied as a towed unit for use behind an ATV quad bike, UTV, 4x4s, compact tractors and ride on lawn mowers. A design feature of this machine is the pre-levelling bar which sits in front of the large tracking wheels and is individually adjustable. It is mounted to a gas strut so if the top surface builds up whilst levelling it, this will "give" to reduce top surface drag. The purpose of the bar is to fill the deeper hoof holes before the large tracking wheels fall into a dip.
We use proper 13mm, adjustable spring steel tines unlike many other manufacturers. These agitate at the correct level keeping the rubber or other top surface on the top and the sand, etc., below. Behind the tines comes the levelling blade which comes in one piece and should have minimum drag when you are setting up your grader. Depending on your surface or preferences you may need or want a rear roller, recommended if you have a wax or fibre mix surface or if you want a more finished surface on silica sand and rubber crumb surfaces.
Key points when using and setting up the machine for the first time:

Key points when using and setting up the machine for the first time:
- Arena side scope for dragging in from the kickboards on the riding school where the horse has flicked up the top surface when cantering or trotting. Our unique design enables you to fit it either side of your arena grader. It is also positioned in front of the menage's tines for immediate agitation by the tines unlike other arena levellers. When this part of the levelling is done simply position it in its out of work mode.
- One time set up - work mode - transport mode. The Chapman MG250 machine has a simple but great feature which is the lift/lowing handle. By pushing the handle down, the leveller is in transport mode, and by lowering it, it is now in work mode and ready to grade your arena. Please note the rear crumble roller is simply positioned and locked above the blade for transport mode using two "D" clips.
- It is generally recommended, depending on the surface and depth of the membrane on your riding school to set the depth of the tines to approximately one to two inches. Couple this together with the other key design features and individual adjustments you can "level" your riding school and not "drag" the surface around and over time end up paying a lot of money by either topping up your school or even having it repaired in relationship to a "moved" membrane over a period.
Features:
MG250: 2.3M working width, spring tines, levelling blade, perimeter blade. MG250+RR: As above but with rear following roller fitted. |
Optional Extras:
Rear Roller: With so many different types of materials being used when installing horse riding arenas, a rear roller becomes essential. Surfaces containing wax and fibres such as Turfloat, CLOPF and Combi Ride all require the rear roller to be fitted to the menage grader. The Chapman rear roller has sealed bearings for smooth operation and very low maintenance. The simple but useful design is such that the roller can be used in two different ways. When in its elevated position it sits above the rear levelling blade, adding extra weight to improve grading when the riding surface has been left too long between grading. It can then be quickly and simply put into the trailed position for normal levelling duties.
Tractor mount option (3-point linkage): We can supply this unit with a 3PTO linkage carrier frame, instead of the towable drawbar. However, please note if you ever want to convert back so it can be towed by an ATV quad bike or similar, you can purchase and simply fit the drawbar instead of the 3 point linkage carrier frame.
Rear Blade Wear Strips: These fit onto the rear blade of the machine, although they are rarely needed. If your riding school is just sand and more abrasive then the wear strips are a more appropriate requirement. It is worth noting that these can be fitted later before the blade wears too close to the pre-placed holes.
Electric powered lift, lower and depth control: An electric control switch operated from the towing vehicle controls the electric lift actuator from transport mode to working depth position. This optional extra is favoured by the busier horse owner or typically livery yards.

Arena Harrow AH200
The Arena Harrow is designed for horse arena maintenance, grading arenas or gallops to create a stable riding base by eliminating hard spots, levelling the surface and improving drainage. This machine is effective on advanced fibre or wax stabilised surfaces such as CombiRide, Turfloat or CLOPF as it orientates the fibres correctly providing the desired results.
This machine provides superior results over traditional harrows. Easily adjusted to provide the required aggressiveness of the tines with three available settings, the 38 tines (8mm each) are offset over 4 rows so that there are no missed spots.
A 12V electric lift actuator with a remote switch on the back of your ATV/UTV, allows for a simple lowering and raising of the unit for getting it into work or travelling modes. The 6 front-mounted (S tines) are very effective for loosening and lifting the surface, providing a better mix of fibre and synthetic materials. The spring tines that follow, smooth out the area before the rear consolidation roller compacts, and orientates fibres across the surface. The Chapman AH200 is a high-quality machine, available with a 50mm ball or pin hitch as a towed unit and comes with a 2-year warranty. |
